To ensure we never disappoint our guests, daily maintenance is essential. Among the many tasks, repairing torn shoji screens is particularly frequent, requiring skilled hands for proper replacement.
This time, as the shoji in our main building is especially unique, the owner of Kobayashiya took on the task personally.
In the past, replacing shoji paper was considered one of Japan’s annual traditions. For example, at year’s end, families would replace all worn-out shoji paper as part of their major house cleaning.
Such customs may gradually fade, perhaps surviving only in places like traditional inns.

宿泊されるお客様の期待を裏切らないために、日々のメンテナンスは怠れません。中でも障子の破れは頻繁にあるため、ある程度修練を積んだスタッフが張り替えを担当します。
しかし本館の一部客室、作家ハタノワタルさんご本人が貼られた障子については、難易度が高く、館主自らが修繕に当たっています。そのプロセスを一部始終追いました。
かつては日本の多くの家庭で、年中行事のように行われてきた障子張りも、和室の減少とともに稀有な行為になりつつあります。小林屋では引き続きこの文化を継承し、また新たな価値観を創造できるよう、取り組んでいきたいと思っています。
